Kitchen – noun – 1. a room or place or the equipment for the preparation and cooking of food 2. a staff that cooks and serves food 3. of or resembling a pidginized language, esp. one used for communication between employers and servants or other employees who do not speak the same language.
Speak – verb – 1. to utter words or articulate sounds with the ordinary voice; talk 2. to communicate vocally; mention 3. to converse 4. to deliver an address, discourse, etc 5. to make a statement in written or printed words. 6. to communicate, signify, or disclose by any means; convey significance.
I have existed in kitchens for almost my entire life, they are a place where cooks, waiters, and their ilk feel free to discuss all things considered impolite among the civilized. Sex, politics, religion, what we truly think and feel are all fair game behind those swinging double doors. In my kitchen the only rule is that you respect people’s right to have an opinion, be mindful of the knives and fire, and speak your mind when you want to. Its safe and dangerous, and I have always called it home…
